These views are my views of the future of your American Legion Post 17 as I see it.

Your American Legion needs a lot of volunteers for this Post to proceed into the future. We need a lot of help to raise money to pay our bills and in the following I will explain where we can use the help. If we lose one of the following money raising programs it will be a matter of time before your post will not be able to pay its bills and will need to shut down. All three programs are vital to keeping your post going into the future.

Post Officer

Every year we have nomination and the election of post officers to run your post. And every year it is the same people that are elected to these positions. Why? Because no one else runs for the positions and the exiting officers are in need of volunteers to help show them the positions that they are doing so that a new person could step in and take their place when that time comes available and for myself yesterday could not come any sooner. Without post officers your post will shut down.

Thursday Night Bingo

Bingo needs workers to collect the money and to award prizes that are won by the players. We need about 10 volunteers to work Thursday nights for Bingo. Starting time is 6.45 pm to about 9:30 pm. If you work 20 times for the year you will get your dues paid for the following year and you and you partner will get to go out for a meal on bingo, also the night you work you can have a couple of refreshments in the lounge. Please contact John Normand or show up on a bingo night to sign up. Must be a paid up member, sons or aux. member to work. Without new volunteers Bingo may shut down by the end of this year.

House Committee

House committee runs the downstairs lounge and upstairs bar and events. These members plan the entertainment for the lounge and upstairs fun raiser and dances. Members meet a couple time a month to plan all and future events. If you feel you can contribute to this position call the lounge for a meeting date and show up.

Kitchen Committee

As of this writing we do not have a kitchen committee and we are in need of one. We have a lot on information to help any committee to put on an event, wedding, alumni reunions. We do have workers but not enough to run a lot of events. Weddings are our biggest events. So if you can cook and want to help we can use it at this American Legion.

Honor Guard

We are proud to do military funerals for our departed members and we will continue to do so for as long as we have enough members to show up to honor our members. What a great honor it is to show our respects to our departed comrades that have served this great country and we would not be the great country that we are without the sacrifice that all our soldiers and their families have endured so that we can be free today. Is it so little to ask to have you volunteer to be on our Honor Guard and show a little respect to our departed comrades.

In closing for now: I ask myself why am I a member of the American Legion? Is it because I served in the service and it is my right to be able to join? Is it what the American Legion is doing to help the local communties? Is it to be on the honor guard and honor our departed members? Is it a meeting place for members and guest to discuss what is happening in our community? Is it a place to work as a volunteer to help out needy individuals in our community? For me it is all of the above, it is because I want to.
